We both began to go through some serious G-Unit withdrawal as soon as we left. That meant that every time we saw a dog we had to run over and pet him or her in order to feed our relentless need to love dogs. These are just some of the dogs we encountered and bestowed love and hugs and pets upon. It helped alleviate some of our longing for our sweet furbabies.
Here is Rosie, the Golden Retriever who is 15 years old and survived chemo. She's been cancer free for over 6 months. Sweet girl. This was in Washington Square. I couldn't help myself and began crying for Nick. My sweet boy. How I wish he could have beaten that evil cancer monster. Rosie was a bit stinky and matted, but I kissed her all over her golden head. I knew only too well what she had endured and said a prayer for her little body.
This is Ami turning away from my camera. Her owner had a little jewelry and trinket shop by the dock. Ami is a PBGV. What's that you say? Huh? Oh! You mean a Petite Basset Griffon Vendeen. Why of course! Silly me. :-) Anyway, Ami means "friend". She was a bit shy. The trinket shop actually had, of all things, a black leather S&M corset complete with nipple clips. What the hell!!?!! I thought I had taken a picture of it, but I can't seem to find it now.
Ami finally looking at my camera. What a cute face!!! I ended up lying down on the carpet with her and rubbing her tummy. She actually purred.
We met Lucy while doing our Cliff Walk. She was so funny! Total goofy sheep-doggish face. Her momma said that Lucy was a Spaniel mix she'd rescued. This little girl was so happy to meet anyone on this walk.
Joseph the Shitzu who belonged to the cutest little old man. They were waiting for the bus together. His face reminded me of an Ewok from Star Wars. I just wanted to take a little bite of his adorable face because he was so cute!!!
Ran into Henry, the Husky and German Shepherd mix, while walking on Bannister Wharf one
morning. You can see his little human sister sitting in her stroller. His mommy said that he gets so excited when he realizes that they're headed for the cafe on the wharf because he knows he'll get an oatmeal cookie. He reminded me so much of my Milo, they both have that big bear-like head. (Of course, I then had to immediately call Lynne so I hear stories about my babiess!)
Okay, we were walking across Trinity Square when I saw this GIGANTIC BLACK BEAST walking his human!!! I screamed and starting running towards them asking if we could pet the beast. The beast turned out to be the gentlest, funniest goofball. This is Splash, the 150 pound Newfoundland "puppy" who is still "growing"!!! His mommy said that Splash just absolutely lives for his walks down to the ocean. He splashes in the waves that crash into the shore, hence his given name.
Another pic of Splash the Newfie. I loved how dashing his scarf looked on him. I totally love, just LOVE, big dogs.
These two had to be the most hyper and energetic dogs I've ever encountered. Meet Biggles and Doogles. Two Bichon Frise (sp?) who literally ran the entire time we toured Fort Adams. They were hilarious. All they wanted to do was find the stinking, grossest and slimiest dead fish washed up on the shore so they could just roll in it for hours. Lindy and Dave, their parents, were a fine couple. Dave was from England and had that cool accent. They walked along with us for miles and miles. Bigggles and Doogles just ran. And ran. And ran.
I was amazed at the variety of dogs out there. I'm used to seeing retrievers and shepherds for the most part out here, so it was definitely a treat to actually see unique breeds of dogs live and in person. Laura over at http://tlc-smileygirl.blogspot.com/ went to Greece a few weeks ago and she posted pictures of the sad state of dogs in Athens. There are stray and homeless dogs all over that city. Most of them were hungry and diseased. You should go over and check out some of the pictures. I'm so grateful we live in a society where for the most part we value individual life, whether it be a human life or animal. Most of the dogs we met in out east were rescues and it was good to see them happy. So good.
