Milo, his brother's keeper

This was Milo just over 24 hours ago, snoozing after a long walk followed by a warm, delicious dinner.

This was Milo tonight after defending his brother, Achilles, from what he perceived to be a threat. His perfect white, heart-shaped face fur, now marred by a gash from the snapping jaw of a dog who dared to frighten his big brother. It all happened so fast.

This is Milo now, after almost 4 hours at the Veterinary Specialty Hospital's emergency room. The gash was deep, a nerve was exposed, sutures were needed, and now Milo is in Nick's old e-collar.

My poor Milo. He was so good at the hospital even though he was scared. My heart broke for him. Looking around that hospital, counting the colored tiles on the wall, and watching Milo's apprehension, memories of Nick's trials in that very same room, Exam Room #5, came flooding back. That was Nick's hospital. I didn't think I'd ever need to see that place again. I was there again tonight with my golden defender, Milo.

I'm going to hate, absolutely HATE, leaving him tomorrow when I go to work. Ed may try to take the day off work to be with him. Milo is in a little bit of shock and the e-collar isn't helping. He is so discombobulated with the collar, keeps bumping into things and crashing into the couch. I hate that collar, but I'll hate it more if he scratches the sutures out of his tender wound. Ouch.

As bumbly and goofy as he is, Milo is always first to run to me when I'm sad or upset, and always the first to protect Achilles from scary garbage trucks, cats in the yard and dogs who want to rush him. He is his older brother's keeper, isn't he?

Sweet Milo, my polar bear, I love you so. I wish I'd taken the bite for you. I wish.

Oh my GOD it looks so painful! Poor Milo! What did the dog's owner do? I'm sure you were soooo scared about this. Sweet sweet little Milo. It breaks my heart to see him hurt. Poor little funnel head. I hope he doesn't have to wear that thing for long. =(

Too bad we can't get Milo and Buster a recovery suite together, where they can be pampered and cared for while we work :( I hope his recovery is quick, poor baby!

That would be so cool! A recovery suite for our sweets.

Ed and I can't wait to meet Buster when we come out to visit Chicago. We're starting to think Milo might have a little Husky in him, what with his fur and slanted eyes. Doesn't he look adorable sleeping in the gondola? Love him!!!

How is Milo doing today?

Hi Monica! How did your run go? Did you come in first? I'll have to check out your blog and catch up with your life.

Milo is doing ok today. He is pretty tired since he can't get much sleep with the cone, but the wound and the sutures look ok so far.

Thank you soooo much for your concern. :-)
