Whew. I am exhausted. I thought we'd have a couple of days of respite after the hectic weekend we had, but it was not to be.
Achilles & Milo had to be bathed yesterday because they were taking meds for Giardia last week and needed to be washed on the last day of their meds. they've both been sick to their poor tummies over the past few weeks and the vet finally figured out that it was Giardia that they had somehow picked up. So, Ed took the day off yesterday to give them both baths.
He drove Milo to Lynne's and took Achilles to Noah's Ark. Returned a fluffy, clean Achilles back to Lynne. Then, he took Milo down to Noah's Ark and gave him his bath. Returned to Lynne's to retrieve Achilles. Finally, returned home with both doggies and got to work on remodel chores, fixing the sprinklers in the front yard, and repairing the damaged gate. Our poor backyard is completely torn up and looks like a war zone.

When I got home from work last night I thought we'd have a quiet Monday night and that we could relax after our crazy weekend, but NOPE.
All of a sudden, poor Achilles started acting as if he'd had a stroke or something. He couldn't go on his walk, he stumbled around like a drunken sailor, he was dizzy, running into objects and walls, panting madly, and kept falling over. It was very frightening. We had seen these symptoms before with Nick. We were pretty sure Achilles had come down with vestibular issues. Poor sweet Golden soul.
I spent the night half asleep for the most part. Achilles kept waking up and panting in distress. I think I slept about 40 minutes straight last night.
This morning, Ed called in another day off from work because I had to go into the office. Lynne & Amos were our savior angels once again. Ed played musical cars with Lynne & Amos because they have a station wagon. By this morning, Achilles completely had trouble even standing on his hind legs. He spent the day at the vet's, who confirmed that it was probably vestibular syndrome. It was a crazy, nutty day at work for me, and a crazier and nuttier day at home for Ed.
Achilles is with us now at home, but he can't stand on his hind legs at all tonight. The vet gave us a little sling to help him stand and attempt to walk. We've tried several times to get him out to pee or something, but the poor thing is scared stiff. We've put out his sleepy blanket by the couch and we're going to bunker down for another night of nursing for the poor boy.
All of this has brought all those memories of Nick flooding back into my head. It is the most painful sight in the world to see an animal struggle this way. It hurts my heart. The only consolation we have is that dogs eventually improve from the vestibular inflammation within a couple of weeks. But, for now, we have to look at our poor sweet Achilles and pray that he isn't in pain. I just gave him a couple of painkillers to ease him into some sleep.
My sweet Belov-Ed. After the day we've both had, I thought for sure we'd get some take-out or something, but he made my favorite meal, chicken enchilada casserole.
I had two heaping bowls because I was so hungry. I would marry Ed a thousand times as long as he makes this casserole for me. It was one of the first meals he made for me when we were first dating and I was hooked. He also made some chicken breast for Achilles and Milo.

I am utterly exhausted right now. Lynne called to see how we're doing. I didn't know how to answer really. I spent the entire day spiked on coffee because I hadn't slep well last night, but now I'm having a hard time winding down.
Milo is just completely confused. He didn't know where Achilles was all day long today. When Achilles did get back from the vet's, Milo was visibly agitated. I think he knows something is wrong with Achilles and that he's not feeling very well. He's been staying close to him and sniffing him a lot tonight. It is so sweet how brotherly they are with each other, even though they're 5 years apart. They are both my dear sweethearts.
Milo keeping his brother company in his hour of distress.
Love this picture of them.
I've never taken a sleeping pill before, but if I had a couple of pills right now I'd pop them with not a second thought. I'm just so very tired.

Oh my Gosh I am sooooo sorry to hear about Achilles. I can't imagine how scary that had to be for all of you. Do you think he'll be better in a couple weeks? Is there any possibility it could be arthritis? I am worried for him and for you. I pray that he is not in any pain. Absolutely heart breaking to see them like this but I hope each day gets better. Please let me know.
I am so sorry and surprised to hear this about Achilles! Mom is also going through a rough time with Breeze right now, trying to decide whether to have surgery. She's done the Giardia treatment with April. I need to go back and re-read your diagnosis, but one of our barn cats at work had vestibular. He has recovered, but it did take 4-6 weeks. E-mail me if you'd like because Breeze's symptoms were paralysis of the hind legs. mindy.hupp@insightbb.com You all will definitely be in my thoughts.
