J is for Jai Ho!

What in the heck is JAI HO!?

Well, if you’ve seen Slumdog Millionaire, you’ll recognize it as the dramatic Indian song about the suffering trials of life, and the uplifting redemption of love. And it won the Oscar for Best Song.

Jai Ho is a victory cry of sorts, often exclaimed in battles and games, or just in simple excitement. Depending on the context, it can mean anything from “Victory!” or “Triumph!” or simply “Wahoo! Yah!”

Every once in a while a song comes along that captures my imagination, and this is one of them. Often a movie song fails to capture the essence, heart, and soul of a movie. Jai Ho is NOT one of them. Even if you don’t speak or understand Indian languages, you cannot help but feel like you’re soaring when you hear the song. It is simply magnificent. I play it in my spin classes and the energy feeds us as we ride and sweat.

Ed has become tired of hearing me randomly exclaim “Jai Ho!” as I sing and dance my special dance around the house. It startles him, as well as the pups. When he first heard me singing the song, he thought I was saying “Die Ho!” That had me laughing ALL DAY LONG. What a nut.

In case you have not been introduced to it, here it is at last. I encourage you to watch the movie as well. Most of the movie is difficult to fathom given the vast poverty and strife in the midst of India’s ridiculously enormous wealth. But that shouldn’t stop you, for it is also a poetic reaffirmation of the human soul’s desperate will to survive, to thrive, and to constantly seek out love, for it nourishes each and every one of God’s creatures.

Jai Ho fellow Blogistaners!!! JAI HO!!!

I have not seen this movie yet and really, I may not. I am scared because I already know it is going to upset me. When I visually get bad pictures in my head, it is hard to get rid of them. I am very sensitive that way. :0
I did enjoy the song though and really think it would be funnier if it was Die Ho. :)
I can see you running around singing/dancing and scaring your people/fur babies. This is how I roll too.

I understand Sue! I feel the same way about horror movies. Can’t watch them because forever long after that I think I see those crazy bloody faces in every dark corner, especially if I go to the kitchen for a drink in the middle of the night.

But, if ever we get to watch it together, I’ll hold your hand through the not so pretty parts, because the pretty parts make it all worth it.

Jai Ho sista! Jai Ho!

I'm so glad I read your comments first, because I thought I was the only person who hadn't seen the movie, as well as the only person who cannot watch (and is not "allowed" to watch) war movies - for the same reason you cited here for horror movies. The last war movie I saw was "Born on the 4th of July," and the disembowling was just a tad too much for this girl. I had waking nightmares for days afterward. No more of those movies for me. I heard that "Saving Private Ryan" was awesome, but I'll have to take everyone's word for that.
So glad that you find this movie and song uplifting and inspiring. I'll try to be brave enough to watch it!

We saw this movie - which is rare for my wife who really liked, for example, "Hotel for Dogs". But we both were intrigued by this movie and the far-away culture it presented. Yes, hard to watch in places(like the orphanage scene) but captivating in many ways, too, with several scenes of great beauty.

Happy Monday!
I saw the movie, but have wanted to watch it again. Movies like this need more than one time for me. I did like it! Thanks you for this post and your thoughts and info on the song. Now my second view will be different. Have a great week.

I love this song (I have it on my IPod!) and LOVED, LOVED the movie - I saw it twice in the theater and bought it the day it came out on DVD. It's just sooo good, and so inspirational.

What a perfect "J" post!

PS- Last night was great! We've got to get together again soon! German next!!

I really liked the movie and often google the child actors that were in the movie to catch up on what they are doing.
I saw them on TV...at the Oscars was it? The excitement and amazement in their eyes was priceless.
I was heartbroken when I learned of how they really live and still live even after this movie.
