Anyway, it has been hard enough to sit through 7+ hours of gruesome medical examiner's testimony, among other emotionally charged witnesses, but when you add into the mix the unthinking, offensive commentary of a colleague, it makes for a bad, bad day.
This afternoon I got into what I thought was an intellectual discussion with a colleague on how the judge may potentially rule. Before I knew it I was caught up in a full-fledged debate with tinges of anger in it. I had my point of view and expressed it, with the caveat that I could be totally wrong since I don't have a strong base in criminal law. However, as the "debate" continued, I was informed that "as a woman" I may be predisposed to thinking and deciding subjectively with my emotions rather than objectively through my intellect and education.
I don't know how best to explain how fundamentally offended I was at that comment. I was furious. F-U-R-I-O-U-S. Listen, I don't find offense with the notion that as a female I may approach conflict resolution with some measure of what makes me feminine, but rather I was beyond pissed that this person tried to continue with an explanation, and ended up saying that women only approach conflict resolution and the legal process with emotion, drama, and focused subjectivity, and therefore, are by definition somehow less intelligent or less able to function as attorneys or judges compared to males. Sweet!
I maintained my wits about me for a variety of important reasons and did not lose my head, but God help me, if the judge rules as I believe he will (in my humble, feminine opinion) I will dance a fucking jig in the middle of my office. I may even bring my tap shoes. Too bad they're not pink.
On my way home I got to thinking how American women had to fight for the 19 Amendment in August 1920 to have access to the ballot box, when ALL males were granted that right to vote in 1870. Sure, one could argue that in theory all men were granted the right to vote in the 15th Amendment, but in reality black men were prevented from comfortably and safely voting for many, many decades to come. However, that doesn't change the fact that at least on paper all male, black slaves, many of them illiterate due to the shackles of slavery, were still considered more capable of expressing their free mind as to politics than women were by more than 50 years. What a patently offensive way of viewing my gender.
And how very sad of an index of how much further we have to go as a society when it comes to the sexist views of many in our land towards women. It sucked having to be on the receiving end of a such a sexist dialogue, but I think I stood up for myself in a honorable fashion. I hope that before my time on earth is over we'll have gone a long way in dealing with the issue.
Let me move to a happier part of my day. My Belov-Ed and my boys are making sure my evening is more relaxing and more pleasant than my day. Ed's watching Biography or the History Channel. He's lounging on the couch next to me, looking adorable in his housepants/party pants.
I spent some time catching up on the news of the world, since I've been feeling disconnected these past couple of weeks. I hate not being at my desk with my computer. As you all know, I am a news addict. I need to know, and like to know, what is going on all around the world, whether that means earthquakes in China, cyclones in Myanmar, progression of power in Russia, elections in Kenya, or Britney Spears' newest dramatic anecdote. It is critically important to know and understand what your fellow man and woman is experiencing. It is living history.
Anyway, Milo is lying by me and Achilles is lying by the breezy doorway. He luuuuurves the breeze. I love my boys so much...
It was Ed's turn to make dinner and we had yum-yum-yummy chicken broccoli & veggie stir fry with noodles. So good I had to snap a picture of it! Surprise, huh?
Since he cooked, I cleaned up, which is an absolute BREEZE because Ed cleans as he cooks. That is an amazing concept for me since I can't be in the kitchen without setting off a cyclone. The kitchen always looks like a bomb site after I'm done cooking. Ed usually spends about 10-15 minutes cleaning up after I cook. Tonight, I washed two bowls, two forks, and one plate after our dinner. Probably done in less than a minute. I swear to God. This would be reason # 6,394,094,726,000 why I love Belov-Ed. :-)
I think I'll go to bed now. I'm teaching my spin class tomorrow and I want to get up a bit earlier and run on the treadmill. Good night for now... (yawwwwn)....

Isn't it such a shame that today, in 2008, some men still feel it necessary to behave like Neanderthals. (And, more troubling, they feel it's their RIGHT to behave that way.) I used to work in a VERY male dominated, very sexist industry and I finally just had to leave - the sexism was SO ingrained and pervasive. Women, no matter HOW capable and competent, were treated like the 'hired help' and men were ALL treated as the Kings of the Castle.
So, I can relate. VERY frustrating because that mentality is like poison.
Luckily, Hubster is an 'evolved' male, and it sounds like 'Belov-ED' is, as well. That's a great photo of him and your puppies.
Sorry work has been so draining. Sounds like a horrible case you're having to witness and be involved in. When it gets you down, remember to just focus on all the beauty around you, and on all the LOVE in your life.
Keep smiling, KBL. :-)
I am sorry that you had to endure what sounds like a partially deaf and blind person's demonstration of HIS clear bias. From what I gather, he just made a case proving that men can be stubborn, bloody-minded and prejudiced. I'll take intuition over that any day!
I cook the same way you do. I am somehow super-clumsy in the kitchen, too; I spill alot in there, but not elsewhere...and always just after it's been cleaned. Gregg cleans as he cooks, like Belov-Ed. It's a quality that wears really well over the years! It's much more fun to cook when we cook together, and not just because he cleans so well.
I hope you have a good holiday weekend and some well-deserved rest. Bless you!
Aw, my sweet KBL, I'm so sorry you work with an asshole! As much as my job sucks most of the time, at least that's one thing I don't really ever have to deal with at work, since this field is obviously dominated by mostly women.
Dinner looked yummy! I have to say, I'm with belov-ED. I try to clean as I go, just because if I don't, it's overwhelming to have to do it ALL at the end. Plus, I run out of room if I don't clean things up as I go. I don't have much counter space upstairs. However, my fabulous, new, beautiful downstairs kitchen has TONS of counter space!! I can't wait to start using it!! This weekend, I started the BIG MOVE, and have all the cabinets just about filled. I hope to be using it soon. Well, as soon as I get a stove, that is!
Jeezaloo, why the hell didn't I just email all this to you? I'm sure everyone else reading this saga couldn't give a rat's ass!!
I hope you have a relaxing Memorial Day weekend. Love you, sista!
I am interested to know whether your coworker wanders around with a wooden club in his hand when he makes these statements. Clearly, he is still living in caveman times. Fortunately, you have found one of the fully evolved men on the planet...
Hope the weekend is a good one...
Wait...so you are saying that women can formulate their own opinions? Fascinating!
Ed can be my eBuddy for putting up with an uppity, opinionated woman like you. He's a pretty smart guy.
OH I hope the judge rules as you predict! It's amazing how in 2008 we still have to deal with such dolts. Don't they know if WE had been running things from the beginning it would be a much better world?
Thanks everyone! It was VERY satisfying to see my pal's face when the judge issued his ruling. Yee haw!
Ed is most surely evolved, and yes Adam, he for sure does put up with little old opinionated me, but don't think for minute that he doesn't dish it out. Ha! Have you forgotten it's election year? I haven't had a chance to blog about our DEBATES concerning McCain and the Democratic nominee. Yee Haw indeed! As I told you once Adam, he would probably love downing some beers with ya....you'd be a listening ear for his woes of a conservative man about to marry a liberal woman. :-)
Have a great weekend everyone!
I swear to God, I think I would have hit your co-worker. That's my testosterone speaking:)
Just catching up on your blog now and was sooo happy to see that the A-hole was put back in his place where he belongs! YAY for you! Are your feet sore from all the tappity tap tap tap dancing you did on his desk??? =)
Who's the interloper in the background of the Ed, Achilles and Milo pic? He/She totally bum rushed the photo.
Oh the ignorence of some...and sadly I'm sure you were talking to a brick wall so he won't change. But his asinine way of thinking will come back to bite him in the ass sometime. I like to catch up on my fav blogs on the weekend so I have time to leave comments as well. :) Oh, and the trip out west has been delayed due to lack of funds at this point...but I am setting aside a Cali trip savings.
