March Madness is here

3-20-08 UPDATE!

March Madness officially kicked today with games on ALL DAY LONG. It sucks that I've got to be at work. :-(

Anyway, as of the end of the first three games, both Ed and I are doing well. Xavier, Kansas and Michigan State all won their games, which is what be both predicted.

I've now posted Ed's bracket below. He's picked a pretty solid bracket. (Check out his tiny, precise handwriting compared to my gargantuan scrawl.) May the best mate win!

(Oh, and Mary Beth and Helen, I think it is SOOOO cool that you have brackets!!! :-) Good luck!)

My pick? WISCONSIN. Please refer to the masterpiece that is my 2008 bracket (you can click on it to enlarge the image):
Well, it’s that time of year again. March Madness is here. It’s about time because right about this time Ed and I begin to go a bit stir crazy and “mad” ourselves.

Ya see ladies and germs, if there is one thing that keeps our relationship spicy and fun (other than different political affiliations, religions, backgrounds and tidiness issues), it is SPORTS.

Yup, SPORTS, SPORTS, and even more SPORTS.

Well, as sports aficionados well know, the lull between the end of football season and the beginning of baseball season can be quite maddening in its own right. Sure, there is golf, the NHL, and the NBA, but for us it is truly college hoops that keep us from going bersek during the slow sports months of February and March. The energy of college sports is rarely matched at the pro level simply because it is not yet a job for the athletes. They are still playing their sport for the sake of sports itself. Very cool to witness.

Ed roots for the University of Connecticut Huskies (“UConn”) and the Navy Midshipmen basketball teams. UConn Mens’s got into the tournament as a #4 seed team and the UConn Women got in as a #1 seed. (Funny quick story about UConn…when I was younger I thought for the longest time that the team was “Yukon” and that the college must have been in Alaska! Ha ha!)

I love my DePaul Blue Demons and Syracuse Orange, NEITHER of whom made the tournament this year. Grrr! But, I must admit, this year I did not watch as much college basketball as in the past, but that doesn’t mean that I didn’t scour the sports news to see why the hell my teams seem to be imploding, as well as to keep up with how other teams were faring in the regular season.

The tournament begins tonight for the college men with the play-in game and then continues until the NCAA championship is crowned on April 7th. Every year Ed and I print out brackets for the tourney and determine our picks. Whichever one of us has the most accurate bracket picks wins something. We’ve yet to determine what that “something” will be this year.

Leo is our astrological sign. My birthday is on August 6th and Ed’s is on the 10th. So, we are both incredibly *competitive*, especially with each other. The NCAA tournament bracket is one of those fun, competitive situations we get ourselves into.

(Well, it is “fun” until Ed gets his A$$ handed to him by a GIRL (yup, little ole me!) when the NCAA Men’s Champion is crowned this year!!! Bwa-ha-ha-ha-ha!)

Sooo...I wonder if Belov-Ed is brave enough to have his bracket posted here??? We shall see…

Anyone else have a bracket or pick they'd like to share? Bring it on! :-)

We have a pool of about 11 this year. I am more clueless than usual this year. Too much going on I guess. Maybe this will help me out because I never win when I know something about the teams. On the one bracket I have done so far (I usually do two - 1 that is run of the mill and then my far out one) I went with the rest of the world and picked NC. I think I may go with Georgetown on my other one. Good luck!

We are keeping up with spring training games to keep us from going crazy until Baseball officially begins. It's always fun when 6 of your starting 8 are on the DL as the Mets started their spring - luckily, they're coming back in dribs and drabs, and as Helen says - if they get all their injuries out of the way in March, we're in good shape. I'm running the pool for the office - I have UNC winning one pool and Texas winning the other. So far, I'm the only one with Texas, so if they win, the money's all mine:)
